The Coward Trust
Sabbaticals

It may be helpful for those undertaking sabbaticals to visit Westminster College, Cambridge, where United Reformed Church sabbatical reports since 1986 are filed, in order to consult these resources. Requests to visit should be made through the Revd Dr Janet Tollington, Director, The Cheshunt Foundation, c/o Westminster College, Madingley Road, Cambridge CB3 0AA / email: jet40@cam.ac.uk

Congregational or United Reformed Church ministers who are planning a sabbatical and wish to make use of these resources can also apply to the Director for finance to cover the costs of such a visit.

For a number of years, a prize was awarded for the best sabbatical reports submitted to the trustees. For details of the prize-winning sabbaticals, see below.

More recently, the Trustees found the report of the Revd Kenneth Summers’s sabbatical of particular interest and so wanted to make it more widely available. As it was submitted in pdf format, a copy can be downloaded. See below.

PRIZEWINNERS:

2004
The Revd Peter and Janet Loveitt
'Early Christians in Britain and Ireland'
Peter and Janet spent their sabbaticals together and produced a video and a written report. Both trace the development of Christianity in Britain and Ireland during the first 1200 years. Janet and Peter were impressed by the courage, faith and tenacity of the early Christian saints, and fascinated by the unfolding history of the church. The story is told through the histories of the ancient shrines and holy places they visited and the lives of the saints they encountered. Their research and experiences are presented in a very accessible way.

A copy of the video can be obtained at a cost of £25 (incl p & p) from the Revd Peter Loveitt at Chapel End, The Row, All Stretton, Church Stretton Shropshire SY6 6JT

2002
The Revd Nick Stanyon
'The Cross'

Nick Stanyon’s sabbatical was spent in research on the theme of 'The Cross'. His report takes the unusual, but extremely usable, form of overhead view foils that are designed for use in worship, in small group discussion and for bible study. Very comprehensive notes accompany the visual material in which Nick shares the results of his study. Copyright issues prohibit reproduction.

2000
The Revd Chris Warner
'Visiting Latvia'
Chris Warner was a member of the Norfolk & Waveney Industrial Mission team when he made a visit to a number of community related projects in Latvia for a sabbatical. This sabbatical report will be a source of encouragement and stimulus to a wide group of people. A bonus is the presentation of the report which makes easy reading and includes many photographs. (copy available on request from the Clerk)

1998
The Revd Rodney Wood
'The Russian Orthodox Church in Perestroika'
Rodney Wood's involvement with Russia began in 1988 as a result of a link between the towns of Canterbury and Vladimir. A personal friendship with an Orthodox priest developed and this Sabbatical Report records a visit made to Russia in the summer of 1996 and extracts of Rodney's correspondence with a lay Orthodox Christian.
